My wrists hurt so i modded my keyboard

I spend atleast ten hours a day on my computer. Evidentally, meaning my hands live in the same awkward posture for most of my waking life.

At some point my wrists started complaining. I wanted to type faster, but I also wanted to stop doing the wrist yoga that normal keyboards force you into. So I started looking into layouts, split boards, layers, and eventually home row mods.

One thing that becomes obvious once you pay attention: your hands are not evenly distributed over a full-size keyboard. Your left hand covers way fewer keys than your right. That imbalance is where a lot of the awkward reaching comes from.

This is what my keyboard looks like now:

Home row mods

The home row is where your fingers are supposed to rest. The bumps on F and J (called the homing bumps) are there so your index fingers can find home without looking.

Home row mods take that idea further. Instead of reaching for CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, or CMD, those modifiers live under your home row keys. Tap the key and you get the letter. Hold the key and it becomes a modifier.

For example:

  • tap AA
  • hold A → modifier
  • tap SS
  • hold S → another modifier

The point is not to make the keyboard more complicated. The point is to stop leaving the home row every three seconds.


The Setup

I did this with Kanata, a keyboard remapper that lets you define tap-hold behavior (and layers) without flashing custom firmware.

My keyboards are very normal:

  • Legion 5 Pro laptop keyboard
  • Redragon Kumara K552

That was intentional. I wanted to see how far I could get before buying or building a split board.


The Layout

The exact bindings matter less than the rules behind them.

Most common modifiers should be the easiest to hold. Keys I fat-finger the most should not sit in dangerous places. Timing is what makes or breaks the whole thing: too short and normal typing turns into accidental shortcuts, too long and every shortcut feels laggy.

So the layout is less a keymap and more a negotiation between comfort, speed, and how much nonsense muscle memory is willing to relearn.


The Learning Curve

Setting up Kanata was the easy part. Retraining years of muscle memory was not. Be vary that i was 130 wpm before doing all this, because again being fast is one thing, but being comfortable is another.

It took about a week before it stopped feeling cursed. At the start, backspace is still the weird one. That key has been carrying a lot of baggage.


Layers vs home row mods

I got the idea for layers from split keyboards.

On a split board, you often hold a thumb key and the same physical keys temporarily become arrows, numbers, symbols, navigation, media controls — whatever you mapped. Home row mods are mostly about bringing modifiers closer. Layers are about making the whole keyboard smaller and more programmable.

The tradeoff looks something like this:

  • Home row mods are easier to add to a normal keyboard
  • Layers are more powerful once you commit (Spoiler alert: I did)
  • Home row mods can interfere with fast letter rolls
  • Layers can feel like learning a second keyboard
  • Both are solving the same problem: stop reaching so much

I do not think one is strictly better. Home row mods are the easier on-ramp. Layers are what you eventually build the board around.

If you are still on a full-size keyboard, home row mods are easier to adopt. Layers make the keyboard programmatically smaller, but the physical keys are still sitting there tempting you. I mapped backspace to [ and disabled the physical backspace key, and I still used to reach for the empty spot because the key was there. On a 34-key board, that temptation disappears.

I have not given up on layers. If you only use ~34 keys, you get a lot more room for everything else — which is a good segue to what comes next.


About Layers

I love them! I hated them at first because remembering where the keys were became difficult.

Let me explain how it works.

This is what my keyboard looks like.

Something you might have immediately noticed is the places where my CTRL and my ESC keys go. These are the most comfortable positions they can be in for me.

Wait wait wait! So do I never use the number keys, and the symbols. Well, 12345(){}<>. So I obviously do use them. Where are they?

Hold down the left ALT key and see what happens to my keyboard.

Was it worth it?

100% Yes.

If you just want to type a little faster, there's better ways to do that. I am already 130+ WPM on full-size QWERTY.

For me the appeal is:

  • getting rid of my wrist pain
  • comfort
  • fewer reaches
  • more space
  • and making the keyboard feel like something I control instead of something I tolerate.

What's next

The obvious next step is a split keyboard — maybe buy one, maybe build one from scratch. Either way, home row mods made one thing clear: the default layout is just one very popular (and overhyped) opinion. The keyboard is a programmable interface. Do not make it boring.
